After all, according to Ovation.com (reference 1), they've been making their signature curved-back guitars since 1966. Serial Number The serial number will be a set of numbers and letters separated by dashes. It is typically found inside the body underneath the strings. There is no way it can be dated by the serial number, Ovation doesnt publish records on the non-U.S.-made models. Just purchased an Ovation Celebrity with electronics for cheap Curious if there is any way to approx date year of mfg since its a Korean build, SN 3554933 Bill V. Ovation makes it easy for a guitar owner to determine the manufacture date of his guitar. The Ovation website lists all serial numbers and their corresponding dates of manufacture with three-digit serial numbers ranging from 1966 to 1973 and six-digit serial numbers occurring from 1972 to 2013.

Ovation guitar and bass guitar information. Ovation solid bodies. The first solid body, the Ovation Breadwinner appeared in 1972, quickly followed by the Deacon. These guitars are easily recognizeable from their unique shape, and although not especially rare, are quickly snapped up by players and vintage guitar collectors alike. I have no idea how Ovation / Adamas serial numbers or dating works, but according to this site, it looks like your Adamas was probably made in 1981, which would make it a Series 1 Adamas. Scroll down to the bottom for the serial number info on the Adamas guitars.

Anyone else heard of this???....I haven't. Roger

But moons ago I had a link to a site where I would type in the make, model and serial number of a guitar. It would tell me the where it was made, when it was made and a brief history of the guitar.

I see that the site isn't as bad as I feared...you have to have the make, model and serial number to get a history. That's different. I understood that the site would give you make and model FROM a serial number. THAT'S SCARY. And very open to use by eBay-using crooks. Roger

If a crooked ebayer wants to lie about the make and model there's nothing you can do. In fact, people do that already, selling guitars they don't have. So be scared now. Big deal.

Hmmm.....come to think of it, I think it was a Martin make that I looked at moons ago. I have an Ovation that I recently acquired that I would like to find the exact month/year it was made. Is there anyway I can find that out online? Simply out of curiousity really.

It gets a little more upsetting when they can add a legit serial number to it, though. The potential is there to cause problems for the legitimate owner of the instrument. You can find out the year, but no more, from the 'Cracking The Code' area on Ovation's website, or within the 'Reference' area within the OFC site. See where within the band of numbers for a year where your serial number is, you can make a fair guess as to what month it was manufactured. Roger |
