El Capitan can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE. To upgrade to El Capitan you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download El Capitan from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. El Capitan is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because. The Mac has avoided widespread malware, and Apple tries to keep ahead of the ways in which malicious software can gain a foothold in macOS. In 2015 with El Capitan. Dropbox started rolling. Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan Setup. GitHub Gist: instantly share code, notes, and snippets. Solved: On my MacBook Pro I have OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan running. Since today the dropbox app does not work any more. I have already reinstalled the dropbox app, deleted the.

Looking for a password manager for OSX El Capitan

Hi all,
I am looking for a Password manager specifically for Mac. No windows compatibility needed. I do want the Password manager to store the data into a local database/file not in the cloud.
I am running El Capitan.
I have looked at 1Password and it is really great but comes with a hefty price tag.
So I am interested in what you Mac guys are using.
Looking forward to your replies.
Regards,
TA

I'm using OS X's Keychain. It's built into Safari and all around the OS. If you don't want the cloud part, I believe you can turn off 'iCloud Keychain' and just use the offline version.

I use 1Password on my Mac and iOS devices, synced with Dropbox.
Good software that you're trusting your security to is worth the price.

1Password is worth it, imo. Have been using it for 3 years now via Dropbox.
But I now also use iCloud Keychain along side of it - the integration into iOS and Safari on OS X makes it easier to use. If there was a dedicated app to look up passwords on the iPhone, I might ditch 1Password (although I like having it as a backup). You can look up passwords on iOS via the Safari section of Settings, but it's kind of a pain.

I'll have to echo everyone's sentiments: 1Password + Dropbox is a lifesaver. Both the hubby and I use this, with the master password available to other in case 'something happens'.. (and I use it for more than online passwords too)

STRIP - Secure Tool for Remember Important Passwords.
Excellent tool; I went to college with the author; was a beta tester for the original PalmOS version. Great tool.

Thanks for the reminder. I was searching for this.
This is also the reason I want a local database.

The reason I don't trust 1Password anymore happened before the LastPass hack - plus the LastPass hack had no effect on me. Even if someone were to gain my LastPass master password they still wouldn't be able to access it because I use two-factor authentication. Someone would have to have both my master password and my YubiKey device.
I have my credit union online access setup to send me a text if someone enters an incorrect password in an attempt to log in to my account. An incorrect password entered even one time sends me a text. On top of that, if they do have my correct password the credit union sends me a text with a one-time passcode that has to be entered before a full login takes place and my accounts can be accessed.
I started receiving one-time passcode texts one day when I had made no attempt to log in to my account - which meant that someone had my password. I changed my password and started receiving texts saying an incorrect password had been attempted - which eventually stopped. Everything was hunky-dory until several days later when I updated 1Password with my new credit union password - and then I started getting one-time passcode texts again, which meant someone had my password again.
I again changed my credit union password and never updated it in 1Password, and have never had any successful login attempts again - so I'm assuming 1Password was the culprit since I quit updating my credit union password in there and no more problems.
There are only two computers I log in to my credit union web site from - my personal laptop (a Mac) and my work laptop (Windows). I had logged in many times from both after changing my credit union password the first time, and it wasn't until I updated 1Password with my new credit union password that the 'rogue' logins started up again. I work in IT security and am very careful about what sites I go to, what emails and files I open, etc - and neither of my machines have ever had any type of virus, malware, or anything like that on them that could have captured my password - and nobody has access to either machine but me.

From what I read, passwords were not stolen in the attack..only some per user salts, authentication hashes and some email addresses. Even before the attack, LastPass strengthened the authentication hash with a random salt and 100,000 rounds of server-side PBKDF2-SHA256, in addition to the rounds performed client-side. They have increased their security even more since the incident, and I too use two-factor authentication, so I'm not worried at all about my information there.

For those storing the master file in the cloud are you concerned about hacking into Dropbox?

Even if Dropbox is hacked, the 1Password database is incredibly secure. More technical overview here (I use a multi-word diceword password for my master passphrase):

+1 for 1Password here too. App syncs nicely across all devices via ilCoud or DropBox or database can be saved locally. You can create 'vaults' which can be used for sets of passwords.

I have been using this for several years now and love it.
Be sure to purchase the OS version of the app OUTSIDE of the App store as that version lets you sync via dropbox.
App has been bulletproof across iOS, OS X, and Win.
