Kent Electric Guitars 1960s

Time and product line

Hagstrom Kent - 1962 - 1966
(also includes Futurama, Futurama De Luxe and Cromwell)
In 1962 there was a brand new Hagstrom model introduced on the market. This guitar has a very 'Strat' like shape and design with two cut aways, tremolo and six in line headstock. Because of the front in acrylate containimng all the electronics and the body covered in vinyl needing no paint those guitars could be manufactured cheaply and rationally meeting the huge demand for electric guitars in the early 60's. The main reason not branding those 'budget' guitars Hagstrom was, according to Karl Erik Hagström, their doubts if the acrylic fronts would keep from cracking! Some Kent guitars with the acrylic front was sold without the Kent logo on the front of the headstock and some with. From 1963 there was also Kent branded guitars build with all solid bodies with two or three pick ups. All Kent guitars had the Tremar tremolo system.

I don’t recall how I got his number, but when I called Dana Sutcliffe to talk about what is probably his most famous—at least known famous—guitar, he said we should do lunch. Dana lives just down the road from me in Delaware, so it was an easy meeting. I asked if he’d ever had Vietnamese pho (beef noodle soup, one of the world’s most perfect foods), and since he hadn’t and since he loves to eat, we met one day in one of South Philadelphia’s numerous pho parlors to discuss the genesis of the Alvarez Dana Scoop. It was, as it turns out, all the result of an accident.
